AcuWeb™ Updater™ 4 | QuickStart Guide

If your site is equipped with Acuity Marketing Communications' newest content management system, AcuWeb™ Updater™4, here is a quick overview of its easy-to-use Site Administrator (or "Admin") tools.

LOGGING IN
Go to http://[yourWebDomainName.com]/admin to access the Web Admin area of the site; enter the editor's username and password previously provided to you.

TIP :: Keep two browser windows open (or one window with two tabs, if you prefer tabbed browsing).  The first window shows the "public side" of the website; the second shows the Admin area.  This makes it easy to jump back and forth and compare what you see on the site to what you are editing via the AcuWeb™ Admin.

FINDING THE STORY YOU WANT TO EDIT
After you've successfully logged in, choose "Edit Content" from the AcuWeb Menu at the upper right ::

This will take you to the first of three pages which list all of the "stories" within the site.
If you don't see the story you wish to edit on the first page, remember to use the navigation above the list to view the second and third pages ::

EDITING A STORY

Once you've found the story you wish to edit, click on its name to open it up in the "Edit Content" view ::

Pretty much everything you'll need to do can be done from right here.  This Word-like interface allows you to type or paste text into the large window below the control buttons, and then style your text using the controls.

If you are simply editing existing text, or wish to type new text directly into Updater [the simplest approach!], you may do this directly in the large window displaying the story content.

If, however, you are pasting in existing text from a Word document, first open your Word doc, select and copy the text you wish to insert, and then use the "Paste from Word" control button, just above the main content window ...  ...to properly convert your Word-formatted text to web-standard, web-friendly format.  (Word's text-styling tools embed hidden "code" in your text that is NOT compatible with World Wide Web standards; this code must be stripped out of your text before it can be successfully published online.)

When you click "Paste from Word", a small window pops up, into which you may paste your incoming text, review it and make any changes you wish, and then click "OK" to insert it into the main window of the content editor ::

STYLING (FORMATTING) YOUR TEXT

Once all your text is pasted or keyed into the main editing window, you may word-smith it and style (format) it to appear as you'd like it to appear on the website.

Our system uses a "style-sheet" method to keep the look of the site consistent across multiple pages.  We are using "Header 1" as the style for all titles, so please leave that setting as-is...

If you wish to change the font style or color of any text in the body of the story, simply highlight the text you wish to change and then choose a Style from the dropdown menu ::

(Note that this list gives you many choices, and that it scrolls beyond "copyright" to show you additional style options.)

If you make no style selection, the system assumes you're OK with displaying text in the standard "Body" typestyle.

Remember that if you make a mistake while styling text, you may always use your computer's "undo" function to back up.  If you find you'd like to undo all of your styling decisions and revert to the original version of the story (before you last saved), use the "Reset to Last Saved Version" button at the top to do so ::

SAVING YOUR STORY
Remember to click "Save Changes" at the top whenever you're satisfied with your changes to that story ::

If you're completely finished with that story and wish to move on to the next one, click the "Back to Content List" link at the upper left of the screen to return to the list-view of all the stories in the site ::

PUBLISHING YOUR STORY
If you would like to see how your changes appear on the "public side" of the site right away, also click the "Post to Web" button at the far upper right of the screen, which will publish to the website this story as well as any other content you've recently edited and saved ::
Note that the act of "publishing" the website takes approximately 60 seconds; remember to look in your other browser window (or tab) and navigate the site until you find the page(s) whose content you have updated.

If you do not see your changes after a minute or so, remember to Refresh or Reload your browser, to be sure it is displaying the latest version of that page.

IMPORTANT NOTE :: Some of the pages you may be working on may still 'hidden' from the site's navigation, perhaps because they are incomplete. These pages will NOT be visible on the "public" side of the website; if you would like to preview them from 'back stage,' choose "Site Map" from the AcuWeb Menu at the top of your screen; scroll down to find the hidden page you wish to view, and cick on the magnifying glass to preview the hidden page. To "un-hide" a page, go to the Site Map, click on the "edit page" icon, and un-check the "hide from navigation" checkbox.  Remember to "save changes" before leaving that page!

ADDING NEW STORIES

Of course, the easiest way to add or update content is to find and edit an existing story.

However, if you want to add a new story (rather than editing an existing one), click the "New" button at the top and a completely blank new story screen will appear ::

Note that when you create a New Story, you will need to define what page of the website you wish it to appear on.  Do this by choosing a "primary page" from the "Publish on Page" area below your main story editing window ::

If you are unsure about which page to put a new story on, remember to look in your other browser window (or tab) and navigate the site until you find the page that will best accommodate your new content; or look up the page via Updater's SiteMap.

MORE ADVANCED EDITING FUNCTIONS
Updater4 is capable of many other, more advanced content management functions, but for now, to keep things simple (and because text editing is the preponderance of content management), we'll stop here.

FYI, Updater4's advanced functions include these and many other features:

» Adding pages to the site

» Rearranging pages on the site

» Re-titling pages on the site (but they must remain SHORT! -- space is limited ;)

» Adding images or navigation links to a story (this is done via the Word-like control buttons; feel free to experiment if you wish; you can't break it and can always "un-do." :)

More Updater4™ tips and help will be posted here soon!  In the meantime, if you need further help, visit our main support page and send us an e-mail with your question!
